It is designed to build more intimacy and show desire to care, but also control. It is therefore much more powerful than an ordinary handshake. Its aim is to build strong bonds and build strategic alliances between high powered individuals.

In the wrong context, these handshakes will seem insincere and off-putting so they should only be used with extreme caution and in the right context.

Description: Unlike the thrust forward handshake, the wrench forward handshaker will pull people into their personal space. It happens during a normal handshake except that a person pulls sharply toward them. This puts the other person off balance, forcing them to fall inward.

In One Sentence: The wrench forward handshake signals that a person wants to pull another in closer so they can control them.

How To Use it: Use the wrench forward handshake to show that you are not prepared to let someone out of your sight. Tell them you are keeping a close eye on them by pulling them into your personal space. This body language serves as a fair warning that insubordination will not be tolerated.

Verbal Translation: “I like you so much that I’m going to pull you into my personal space so we can be more intimate, besides if you stay close I can keep a better eye on you and control you better.”

Cue In Action: Bob liked Doug very much, but the sentiment was not reciprocal. When they shook hands, Doug reached out and away from his body, but as soon as Bob got a good grip, he pulled him and close almost making him fall. Doug laughed it off, but made a note to avoid shaking hands with him next time if possible.

Meaning and/or Motivation: This is done by people who require less personal space than normal.

People who shakes hands in this way are also trying to control the other person by moving them into their personal space against their will. They feel that they can influence them more efficiently by making them uncomfortable. They are also setting the other person off balance making them unable to properly respond.

Another variation exists where someone might pull you forward toward a chair, or move you to the side of the room as desired. Someone that shakes hands like this is trying to set the tone for the relationship by controlling where you move next. Obviously, this is a sign that they want to dominate you.

Description: This handshake is so quick, it’s actually offensive. It lasts merely seconds where the hand is quickly grabbed then released or tossed aside. Sometimes it even lacks any pumping action at all.

In One Sentence: The undershaker is person who covets their own personal space and wants to keep their distance as much as possible.

How To Use it: When you dislike someone, you may try to keep physical contact brief to tell them that it makes you uncomfortable. A quick shake followed by moving backwards, eyes averted, says that you are not willing to interact with them or give them the time of day.

Verbal Translation: “I don’t like what you are selling and I feel like you are trying to take advantage of me so I’m going to drop your hand as quickly as possible so I can get on with my own agenda.”

Cue In Action: The door-to-door salesman managed to make his way inside the house with a slick sales pitch, but the more the homeowner learned the more he disliked the idea. He didn’t know how to get out of the deal as he had already agreed to a sample. When finalizing, the salesman put his hand out to shake and being polite the homeowner did, but he released after just one pump and tossed the shady salesman’s hand aside abruptly.

Meaning and/or Motivation: Someone who shakes hands like this is showing indifference and suspicion.

It is common when someone feels that you are trying to sell them something they aren’t at all interested in buying, or trying to get them to do something they aren’t willing to do.

Other times they are trying to signal that you are intruding on their ground and that no agreement will be made. It’s probably best to respect their wishes, as their initial impression shows that you have come on far too strong.

Other times the undershaker is demonstrating his high need for personal space or lives in a location where physical contact isn’t normal.

Cue Cluster: Some who uses the undershaker handshake will give clues that he does not want to be there. He will turn his head and torso away, move his feet toward the door, will keep his head nods brief, if he nods at all, will take a step back and will only feign listening. This person wants to leave.

Meaning and/or Motivation: Someone that grabs your fingers rather than your entire hand is trying to keep you at a distance and also put you in your place. Short grabbers are usually insecure but often try to hide this by coming off as dominant through the infliction of pain and the denial of proper, though measured, intimacy which the handshake is designed to create. If they add a crushing action in addition to the finger tip grab they are trying to send and even stronger message by displaying their physical power over you.

Crushing is used to put a bit of fear into their partners so as to dismiss the likelihood of any future challenge against them. In other words, the short grabber is messing around with the handshake on purpose and trying to put another person through the ringer, so to speak.

When the handshake comes up short by accident, rather than on purpose, the other person will let up and apply less pressure or readjust so as to do a proper handshake rather than cause undo pain.

If by chance, you accidentally grab the fingers of someone else, which can happen when men shake hands with women, you can vocally suggest doing the handshake over again. A simple “sorry, that didn’t quite work, let’s give it another go” will suffice. This will show that you are concerned about starting off on the right foot and truly wish to set the proper tone for the relationship.

Description: A rhythmic motion done by repeatedly applying the hand to the back, head, thigh or other part of another person’s body.

In One Sentence: Patting is a sign that one wishes to comfort through touch.

How To Use it: Use the pat to solidify and build bonds between people. A father can bond with his son or daughter by patting their back. Likewise, to offer sympathy to someone who is emotionally suffering, patting the back can help sooth. This cue reminds us of being cared for by parents so use it whenever you want to show parental support.

Avoid using patting on higher authority figures as un-reciprocated touching signals dominance.

Context: General.

Verbal Translation: “I’m trying to comfort you by patting you.”

Variant: The pat can sometimes indicate the desire to break up a hug as in the “hug ender cue.” The patting action is like that of a wrestler how wishes to submit and be released from the clutches of his opponent. See Bottom Slapping or Bottom Pinching, Hug Ender Cue.

Cue In Action: a) During a warm embrace, Mom comforted her little boy by patting him on the back. b) A friend pats the top of the forearm of her friend to show her that everything is going to be okay.

Meaning and/or Motivation: A reassurance gesture aimed at soothing and comforting another person. The pat finds itself during hugs as well as between a boy and his father who might pat the top of his head to create and maintain a strong bond.

In One Sentence: Palm orientation, up, down, or even, indicates submission, dominance and equality, respectively.

How To Use it: Use the type of handshake for the type of relationship you would like to create. Use palm even when you want to create an equal relationship, palm down to show your dominance over someone, and palm up to show you wish to submit. For example, women can offer their hand palm up to men they find interesting whereas a domineering boss could offer his hand palm down to keep his employees in their place.

Cue In Action: a) b) A cute boy came up to her and introduced himself. He extended his hand to shake hers while introducing himself. She instinctively put her hand out palm up as if she was ready to hold his hand and submit to him. b) The boss extended his hand out to his employee – always palm down forcing his employees to take on a palm up orientation in order to complete the handshake. c) They met palms vertical showing that neither wished to display dominance, nor submission.

Meaning and/or Motivation: a) When someone presents their hand palm up “offered” as a handshake they wish to be, or appear, submissive. They want to be on the bottom and be dominated or be lead by other people. We will usually see women or feminine men offer a hand in this way. It usually appears as if they desire their hand to be held rather than shook. When men do this but don’t wish to appear submissive it leads to lack of credibility.

b) When someone presents their hand palm down during a handshake, they wish to dominate. They want to have their hand on top, to be on top, and force the other person into a palm up orientation. Sometimes people will try to maneuver their way to a top down position by twisting.

c) When the palm is vertical, then the person doesn’t want to dominate or be submissive.

Conversely the limp fish shake can be done due to natural muscle weakness especially when done by the elderly or sick.
