Description: This handshake is so quick, it’s actually offensive. It lasts merely seconds where the hand is quickly grabbed then released or tossed aside. Sometimes it even lacks any pumping action at all.

In One Sentence: The undershaker is person who covets their own personal space and wants to keep their distance as much as possible.

How To Use it: When you dislike someone, you may try to keep physical contact brief to tell them that it makes you uncomfortable. A quick shake followed by moving backwards, eyes averted, says that you are not willing to interact with them or give them the time of day.

Context: General.

Verbal Translation: “I don’t like what you are selling and I feel like you are trying to take advantage of me so I’m going to drop your hand as quickly as possible so I can get on with my own agenda.”

Cue In Action: The door-to-door salesman managed to make his way inside the house with a slick sales pitch, but the more the homeowner learned the more he disliked the idea. He didn’t know how to get out of the deal as he had already agreed to a sample. When finalizing, the salesman put his hand out to shake and being polite the homeowner did, but he released after just one pump and tossed the shady salesman’s hand aside abruptly.

Meaning and/or Motivation: Someone who shakes hands like this is showing indifference and suspicion.

It is common when someone feels that you are trying to sell them something they aren’t at all interested in buying, or trying to get them to do something they aren’t willing to do.

Other times they are trying to signal that you are intruding on their ground and that no agreement will be made. It’s probably best to respect their wishes, as their initial impression shows that you have come on far too strong.

Other times the undershaker is demonstrating his high need for personal space or lives in a location where physical contact isn’t normal.

Cue Cluster: Some who uses the undershaker handshake will give clues that he does not want to be there. He will turn his head and torso away, move his feet toward the door, will keep his head nods brief, if he nods at all, will take a step back and will only feign listening. This person wants to leave.

Description: When the feet point toward the direction they wish to travel.

In One Sentence: Toes are believed to subconsciously signal the direction in which people wish to travel, or in the direction in which they are thinking.

How To Use it: Foot pointing usually goes unnoticed, however, to show intimacy and focus, orient the entire body toward the person who you wish to express your undivided attention. This works well in business, dating, as well as other relationships. Showing others that they have your nonverbal attention is much more powerful than simply lending an ear or an eye. Despite the cue being out of usual awareness, it is quite likely that others will pick up on your cue and ascribe to you positive attributes. Verbal Translation: “My feet are honest and point in the direction I wish to travel.”

Cue In Action: a) In his excitement, he failed to realize that his buddy really needed to get going. His buddy’s head began to drag backwards, his torso faced away, and his feet were aimed away from him and toward his car. His body language really said that he needed to get going. b) He wasn’t interested and wanted to leave – his feet slowly inched toward the doorway rather than toward her. On the other hand, her feet were directly facing, and extended, in his direction. The affection was not mutual.

Meaning and/or Motivation: Feet are intension cues because they are the earliest indicators of where the mind wishes to go. Feet point to doorways when someone wants to leave and away from people they do not agree with. If feet are pointed away from you, it’s a strong indicator that a person wishes to be elsewhere.

It has been said that the feet are the most honest part of the body as it applies to the language they emit. Millions of years ago, we gave up quadrupedalism to walk upright, leaving our feet to the dirt. While our hands busied themselves with other complex tasks like fire building, making clothing, shelters and throwing spears, our legs were relegated to more primitive activities like locomotion.

The feet have always carried out more traditional tasks like escaping predators, avoiding hot sand or coals from a fire, leaping from slithering snakes or poisonous spiders, or navigating rough rocking river bottoms. The feet were therefore connected more to the reptilian brain that reacts to stimuli directly. The feet don’t contemplate higher order tasks that require planning.

Feet, therefore, make great predictors of behaviour. For example, we know that children are interested in play rather then eating when their legs bounce at the dinner table. Their feet bounce up and down as they quickly gobble their food so they don’t miss the action. Even if feet don’t fidget they will still point, or inch toward the door in effort to prepare for escape. Therefore, the feet of adults reveal true emotions by pointing away from boring conversations and towards things they find attractive or stimulating.

Cue Cluster: Usually the torso also tends to aim in the direction of desired travel, along with the head. Conversations will begin to dry up, agreement indicators either speed up to quicken the conversation or slow down if there is little more to say. Barriers like arm crossing or partial arm crossing will accompany the foot indication.

Description: Stealing a look is a quick left or right dart of the eyes so as to avoid detection. The head normally remains motionless to reduce the changes of being noticed.

In One Sentence: Stealing a look indicates the desire to see someone or something, without others noticing.

How To Use it: To steal a look, use sunglass if possible. Keep your head oriented away from the target, and shift your eyes only, in their direction. If your target is a person, and they make eye contact with you, but you are wearing dark sunglasses, rest assured that your eyes are concealed. At this moment, you should avoid shifting the head away suddenly as this give you away.

Eyes can also steal looks without sunglasses in the same way but since the whites of the eyes are highly visible, you will run a greater risk of being discovered. Researchers believe that the whites of the eyes tell others where our eyes are looking because eye orientation is highly important as a signaling device in social contexts. Therefore, whenever you try to steal looks, be conscious of this.

Stealing looks shows others that you are interested in them but are timid about your curiosity. This comes across as suspicious behaviour and is not well received. Therefore, stealing looks is not a cue that should remain covert.

Verbal Translation: “I’m curious and interested in what’s going on over there so my eyes dart without turning my head so I can evade detection.”

Variant: The eyes can dart when seeking exits when in undesirable circumstances, when nervous, excited, or even when thinking. See Looking Askance for an eye cue that signifies contempt.

Cue In Action: a) He was attracted to the girl in the subway, but didn’t want to make her feel awkward. He kept darting his eyes in her direction without moving his head. b) He kept glancing quickly over his shoulder at the angry girl. When she looked up, he quickly snapped his head back and continued the conversation with his buddy. He didn’t like her and certainly didn’t want her to know that he had noticed she was there, lest she come over and confront him.

Meaning and/or Motivation: Both sexes do it to check out a sexual prospect, a rival while at the same time remain safe from detection. When someone evades detection it is because they are not prepared to pick a battle or are merely collecting information about what is going on. This type of eye pattern is seen as cowardly and an indication of low confidence.

The eyes may also dart looking for ways to exit a particular situation without doing so overtly. This case may arise when someone is in an awkward conversation. Eyes may also dart due to fear. People generally associate darting eyes with lying, but research shows a poor correlation.

Darting eyes are considered be negative body language.

Cue Cluster: Watch for darting eyes that don’t want to be caught looking. The shoulders often remain lowered; there will be no gazing or smiling and no facial expression.

Description: When two people stand or sit with their torsos at forty-five degrees to one another forming a v-shape.

In One Sentence: Standing at forty-five degrees is a casual, cooperative, non-intimate standing posture.

How To Use it: Use the forty-five degree standing orientation when you want to make other people comfortable without being confrontational or intimate. The orientation is perfect for business as it is for friends.

By not facing head-on, it allows people to escape easily if they so desire. This will create positive feelings when people are simply sharing information. The same orientation works well when sitting. When people need to work together to get things done and are on the “same team” meeting in this way permits the easy sharing of information.

Men should always approach women at this angle and maintain it when conversing to make them feel more comfortable. Women and most men rarely appreciate being approached blind such as from behind and approaching head-on can be intimidating. Approaching from the side, therefore, is the best possible approach orientation.

To build intimacy on the other hand, if this is desired, should be done by slowly and carefully orienting to a head-on orientation.

Cue In Action: a) The girls huddled up together and exchanged emails. They were both at forty-five degrees to one another. b) The employees were preparing for their presentation and chose the corner of the table, one on each side, to exchange their ideas.

Meaning and/or Motivation: Sitting over the corner of the table is a cooperative sitting orientation as is standing at forty-five degrees. However, most people would state that standing square, face-to-face was the most honest and trustworthy position people orient themselves in while speaking with someone, but they would only be half right. In fact, most Americans stand at forty-five degrees or at oblique angles to one another. Facing someone dead on, is how boxers square off to one another in the pre-show weigh-in or when two men near physical contact at a bar.

The casual corner position is most appropriate to preserve closeness between people, but at the same time offers a partial barrier. The barrier in this case, is the corner of the table. If chairs are directly facing the table, it avoids direct eye contact, but if preferred, the chairs can face one another across the corner of the table to make sharing of information easier. This seating position is unique because it neatly allows for independent thought, but the proximity still permits intimacy.

When standing at forty-five degrees it permits either party to quickly and easily exit the situation merely by walking forward. This creates comfort because it is a demonstration that both parties do not wish to encroach on the other and block them in.

Cue Cluster: This cue defines the context so does not require additional cues. One might watch for other signals of cooperation, however, such as palms up, head nodding, head tilted to the side, leaning in, eye contact and verbal agreement indicators.

Description: The “skirt hike” happens by fingering and playing with the bottom ridge of the skirt. Other times, the skirt hike happens in a more pronounced way by grabbing the bottom of the skirt and pulling it up slightly to reveal more leg.

In One Sentence: The skirt hike is a subconscious nonverbal cue signaling sexual interest.

How To Use it: Women can use the skirt hike to tantalize potential male suitors. Normally this cue happens subconsciously as a woman plays with the material at the bottom of her short skirt. She may also slightly raise it. However, this can be done on purpose as well. Raising the skirt to show a little more leg while making eye contact should be enough to arouse the curiosity of men of interest. The cue is potent while standing, but it can also be done while sitting. If you see that an undesirable man notices the cues, simply shove the skirt back down while avoiding eye contact.

Context: Dating.

Verbal Translation: “This skirt is really getting in the way of my attractiveness, and way too long to attract the attention of the boys, so I’m going to pull it up a little bit and see who notices. Hopefully someone cute or else I’m going to push it back down in a hurry.”

Cue In Action: a) Newly single, Debbie was with her friends casually enjoying a drink at the bar. One hand clasping her drink, the other dangled loosely to her side while fiddling with the bottom of her skirt. Just then, she noticed a sweaty, awkward man, staring at her. She quickly brought her hand up, grabbed her straw, turned her back toward him and huddled in with her friends. b) Later in the evening Debbie had met a man named Dave. She and he had been carrying on for some time. Dave, an expert on body language, noticed that she was casually playing with the riffled edge of her skirt and would pull it up a bit at a time and then drop it and smooth it back down. He took this as a strong message of coy interest and availability.

Meaning and/or Motivation: The skirt hike is an interesting body language cue because it happens completely subconsciously with usually no awareness at all. It is so subtle though that only those looking specifically for it will actually see it. This motion is usually done toward a man of interest and followed by eye contact, but other times, happens as advertisement of the woman’s availability, generally – an open for business sign, so to speak. If she catches someone else notice this gesture that she isn’t interested in, however, she will quickly force the skirt back down and break eye contact.

Cue Cluster: It is possible that the skirt hike cue happen independent of other cues as a general broadcast signal directed to the room. It may also be anchored to a specific person through eye contact coupled with submissive cues such as eyes cast downward, batting eyelashes, laughing and giggling, touching the hand, forearm or other areas, head lowered or bowed, neck titled to the side, smiling, grooming either the self or person of interest, playing with the hair or hair tossing, and so forth.

Description: a) A woman will turn her back slightly facing the object of her interest, raise her shoulder, and gaze adoringly over it with eyes cast upward. The cue is made more salient in a strapless dress. b) Sometimes referred to as “Stealing A Look” but in this case, the shoulder is not raised, the look is quick so as to avoid detection, and the head is not lowered and eyes not cast upward.

In One Sentence: Looking over a raised shoulder is a flirty gesture.

How To Use it: Women can create sexual interest by peering over a raised shoulder. The cue is more potent when done over a nude shoulder such as a strapless dress. To compound the cue, couple it with slightly raised eyes that briefly make eye contact as well as a coy smile. If the desired results are not achieved, simply repeat the cue.

Cue In Action: a) She knew all the right buttons to push to get his attention. She removed her light overcoat, raised her shoulder, turned in his direction, smiled coyly, batted her eyelashes, before lowering her head and turning back for a sip of her drink. He was sent into fits. He knew it was an invitation to approach.

b) He kept glancing quickly over his shoulder at the angry girl. When she looked up, he quickly snapped his head back and continued the conversation with his buddy. He didn’t like her and certainly didn’t want her to know that he had noticed she was there, lest she come over and confront him.

Meaning and/or Motivation: Women do this flirty gesture as they gaze at men of interest. Instead of squaring themselves off and looking straight into his eyes, her body faces away and she looks over the shoulder which seductively teases him. This posture emphasizes the curviness of the shoulder and exposes the vulnerable neck. It is particularly alluring when done by women wearing a strapless outfit!

The power of the cue relies on its ability to tease through mystery. A bit of hide-and-seek mixed in with sexual curves of the shoulder as well as easy eyes cast upward showing submission. The entire cue, when done properly, is both seductive and coy.

In a general context, the sideways glance is done to steal a look without being caught. This might indicate that a person is trying to remain secretive, is talking behind another person’s back, or doesn’t want the other person to notice them. Stealing a look can also mean that sexual interest exists but that a person wishes to be covert.

Description: The shoulder shrug posture happens as the head seems to sink inside the shoulders, however, what is really happening is that the shoulders are slowly being raised so the neck disappears taking the head with it. It is as if the head is being swallowed by the shoulders. Shrugs can appear as micro-movements barely perceivable or as full on shrugs where the shoulders nearly touch the ears.

In One Sentence: Shoulder shrugs indicate lack of knowledge and ultimately submission.

How To Use it: Shrug the shoulders when you don’t know the answer to a problem or you wish to show submission. Shoulder shrugs can be used to show others that you accept defeat when it is coupled with a lowered head. Therefore, you may consider using it when pleading for forgiveness.

In dating, women can use the shoulder shrug to take on a smaller profile in order to create the impression of submissiveness and therefore elicit a protective and caring partner. Children and men can also do the same. When submission occurs, it produces a sympathetic response when it is seen by an empathetic viewer.

Variant: Shrugs contain key elements such as hunched shoulders where the shoulders are raised and lowered, hands twisted into the palms up position (one or both hands), lowered mouth corners (while hands and head remain still), raised eyebrows (which shows astonishment, indifference, and bewilderment). Each variant, independent of one another, can carry the meaning of the shrug.

He lowered his head, turned his palms up and shrugged his shoulders. He didn’t need to say anything. She understood he felt sorry for what he had done.

Meaning and/or Motivation: A universal expression of doubt and uncertainty. Shoulder shrugs can signify apology, disbelief, ignorance, indifference (lack of interest), helplessness, resignation, discomfort, low self-confidence, insecurity, weakness or powerlessness and shame. Many negative emotions are expressed through shoulder shrugs.

A shrug can also mean that you don’t know the answer, that you don’t want to get involved, or imply submissive apology.

Shoulder shrugs in a business context are usually found when someone is centered out on their poor performance. The origin of the “head turtle” is to protect it from harm. For example, when people hear a very loud bang, they will quickly pull their heads inward and down, and tuck in their chins. However, when it is done out of shame, it happens more slowly and deliberately so as to draw even less attention.

Shrugging is also done when people want to appear less significant so they go overlooked and are ignored rather than called on. In business, the head duck will occur when subordinates meet with superiors as they try to stand out less and look less significant or when employees wish to be overlooked during status reports at a boardroom meeting. It might also happen in class when the professor is calling on students who don’t have the answers, or when athletes have to walk back in shame to their dressing rooms after losing an important match.

The shoulders hunching up with palms up indicate a desire to hold a more narrow and protective posture hence it is submissive like a turtle going up in its shell.

The shoulder shrug can also appear in a dating situation where women appear meek and submissive. Shrugging is a childlike posture and happens when a woman let’s her guard down. It is often subtle and occurs subconsciously as a small raise of the shoulders and sometimes is accompanied by an eyebrow flash. Other times it is more pronounced and the head lowers or bows in unison. In this case, the shrug may be held for some time.

Description: While seated, a person will place the hands on the thighs in the sprinters position and lean forward onto the balls of the feet as if ready to spring up. One foot might also be extended forward in the direction one wishes to leave. While standing, it happens by placing the hands on the hips (See Arms Akimbo or Hands On Hips).

In One Sentence: Seated readiness is a nonverbal demonstration that a person is ready for action.

How To Use it: Use seated readiness to show people that you are action oriented and ready to start a project.

Being at the edge of your seat makes sense in business to show eagerness. However, it does detract for appearing dominant. Therefore, caution should be used to not appear over-eager. That being said, as a new associate, sitting forward shows a natural response to being part of a new team. A new person should be eager, while a boss should be leaning back (showing his dominance) and more casual.

One can also use seated readiness to show that you are ready to leave to a new location or are finished with the conversation.

Context: a) General b) Business.

Verbal Translation: “I’m like a sprinter ready for a race. I’m leaning forward, head forward, arms ready to prop up and push forward. In other words, my posture indicates my readiness to take action!”

Variant: While standing, one foot might move forward with the weight on the ball of the foot indicating the same thing. See Arms Akimbo (a standing ready posture).

Cue In Action: a) The girls were full of booze, some were slouched over, obviously not bar-ready, while the leader was in a ready position, arms on her thighs, leaning forward, trying to get the others motivated for a night on the town. b) He was a real go-getter, always full of energy and enthusiasm. When the boss spoke, he was always at the edge of his chair and ready to go on the next errand. b) The waitress was pressed by her boss to empty a few tables of their patrons to user in new customers. Rather than force groups out, she simply watched for those at the edge of their seat, approached them, and handed them their bill. They happily paid and left.

Meaning and/or Motivation: A readiness gesture and an intension movement indicating a desire to end a conversation and leave, or take some other form action. In a business context, it usually shows the desire to do productive action.

This cue is especially useful in sales and negotiation because it tells us that a person is either ready to commit to the sale or else leave and end the pitch. Watching for the cue can also turn us into good leaders because it tells us that others are receptive to a change of scenery or a change in activity. For example, it would be inappropriate to suggest leaving to a group of people that are lounging around talking and socializing. However, suggesting a change of venue to those on the edge of their seats, turns you into a mind-reader. When you suggest the action, you get credit for effective leadership. Often, leadership is acquired by suggesting people do things just before they would have otherwise done it on their own accord!

Cue Cluster: This cue is stand alone and has meaning onto itself, but watch for head bobbing in agreement or excessive agreement indicators to try to speed the speaker up and finish his thoughts, alert facial expressions, eye contact, head tilted to the side in interest, bags backed up ready to go, foot extended forward toward the exit and so forth.

Description: The room encompassing glance occurs by first casting her eyes around the room for five to ten seconds. If she spots someone she is interested in, she will take a second look. This second glance is not directed at the entire room, but rather in the direction of a specific man. It will be short, and she will rotate her head twenty-five to forty degrees to the side then look away, usually downward, within about three seconds. Women usually continue this behavior until they meet their target’s eyes. At this point, the target and the woman will hold a mutual gaze lasting about three seconds which is normally broken by the woman by looking down.

In One Sentence: The room encompassing glance is a female cue signaling sexual interest.

How To Use it: Women should follow the Description (above) in a dating context to signal sexual interest. At times, the cue will need to be repeated or coupled with additional sexual cues to send a more definitive sexual invitation. Women should send nonverbal signals to men as an invitation, but also, and perhaps more importantly, as permission to approach. The more signals offered, the more likely it is that men will receive the message correctly and also act upon them.

Context: Dating.

Verbal Translation: “I’m interested in you and I want you to know that by looking over at you coyly. I’m giving you permission to pursue me.”

Cue In Action: Emily was smitten. She couldn’t stop herself from looking at Dave but she was way too shy and scared to go over and talk to him. She cast her eyes his way but didn’t want to get caught looking. Each time he looked her way, her eyes darted to the ground in embarrassment. After the third time, Dave knew something was up so he sauntered over and said “hi.” She blushed immediately.

Meaning and/or Motivation: The room encompassing glance is a sexual signal performed by women interested in being pursued. More specifically, it is done by women who are “checking out” potential suitors and it is done totally unconsciously as is most all other body language. It is very subtle and also very specific.

It should be noted also that most men are fairly clueless in reading this signal and usually miss it. If women wish to make it more powerful and obvious they should add a slight smile. The light bulb usually goes off with the addition of this more overt signal.

Description: a) When the lips form a pout or kiss and are pushed forward. Sometimes the cue is barely detectable where the lips only press together slightly. b) A facial gesture done by pressing the lips together and pushing them forward and crunching the eyebrows downward and inward as if in grief. A childlike facial expression where the bottom lip is pushed out.

In One Sentence: Pouting lips signals a negative though or the desire to kiss.

How To Use it: In dating, eyes to the lips of another coupled with lip pouting signals that one is ready to kiss. Women can use this gesture with good results at the end of a date to signal to their partner that they are ready for intimacy.

Pouting can also be used to manipulate the emotions of others. Children, like adults, can use the expression to show sadness. When viewed, others are likely to offer a caring response which can help you get what you want.

Verbal Translation: a) “I really want to kiss someone, and I’m puckering in anticipation.” b) “I’m upset and it’s causing me grief forcing me to press my lips together.”

Cue In Action: a) She was aroused by Dave and found herself subconsciously pressing her lips together as if she was already kissing him – the anticipation was driving her mad. b) She was only 3 years old, but knew full well that if she pouted for long enough with sad eyes, Dad would do anything she wanted.

Meaning and/or Motivation: a) Lip puckering is a sexual cue, or desire to kiss, when in context.

b) Bottom lip jut is a negative thought indicator or that disagreement is present especially if accompanied by frowning, scrunched eyebrows, or other negative cues. This gesture is usually done by small children or by adults resorting to juvenile characteristics trying to secure affection, privilege, resource, or reward of some kind from another person. The lip jut is also called pouting and shows helplessness and lack of agency. This is the case when done by adults or children.

Cue Cluster: Lip puckering is usually associated with a) Other sexual cues of interest such as strong eye contact or eye to mouth, neck titled to the side and neck displays, lip licking and self touching or b) With hung or hunched shoulders, sad droopy eyes, scrunched up eyebrows, head down, verbal sighs and other helpless and dejected body language.
