University College studied the effects of dominant body language on the relative attractiveness of men.
The researchers first produced a short video clip. It consisted of a 1 minute silent video segment featuring three dominant conditions. Each clip featured the same 23-year-old male sitting by himself on the sofa. Just off camera where two unseen confederates for which he was conversing, one to his left and one in front. The on-camera male confederate was instructed to carry (1) closed body postures such as arms folded across the chest, legs in a contracted parallel position – low dominance, (2) open body postures without gesticulation including arms stretched across the sofa with legs open – medium dominance, and (3) open body postures with gesticulation and sexual touching – high dominance.
Women were then approached at various locations across campus, 81 in total. After getting consent, the subjects were given a survey to measure their relative level of extroversion and introversion. They were then invited to a computer to watch one of the three video clips. Participants viewed only one clip and were randomly assigned. The subjects then rated the male confederate appearing in the video on his sexual attractiveness by filling out a survey.
The researchers found that dominant nonverbal behaviour significantly increases the attractiveness of men. It accounted for 10% of the variance between the “nice guy” and the more dominant guy. The women also showed no directional preference based on extroversion or introversion – both preferred the dominant guy.
Noteworthy is the fact that men can increase their ratings of attractiveness with simple postural changes. “This indicates that women may use simple nonverbal signals of dominance as criteria for male attractiveness. Thus, our results contribute to extant literature on the “nice guys finish last” phenomenon by showing that dominant body postures do result in higher ratings of sexual attractiveness. Dominant nonverbal behavior appears to increase women’s ratings of men’s attractiveness.”
